Updated: Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, 12:14 am -- The attacker was a former graduate student in sociology, dressed in black, who came in through an unsecured side door and started firing from the stage of a lecture hall. Police confirm he did kill himself. The story uses the phrase "brief, rapid-fire assault" to describe the murders. Interesting, very specific choice of words, and intentional it would appear. One student recalls yelling to herself, "Oh God, he's going to shoot me. Oh God, I'm dead." Trampling upon each other, scrambling to get out, because -- by university decree -- they are not permitted to do anything else but run.
Also, news accounts are becoming clearer. Tragically, five students have died as a result of the "no guns on campus" policy. The geology teacher, a grad student, earlier reported to have been killed in the criminal attack, is wounded and expected to recover.

Updated: Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, 11:11 pm -- Here is the Northern Illinois University Student Code of Conduct. You'll get the point when you get to "the words."
"Dangerous Weapons: 1.5a Possession, use, sale, or distribution in any residence hall, building,or grounds under university control of: fireworks, firearms, shotguns, rifles, hand guns, switchblade knives, any type of ammunition, explosives, and all other serious weapons. 1.5b Misuse of martial arts weaponry, BB guns, pellet guns, clubs, knives, and all other serious weapons. Students who wish to bring firearms to the campus must obtain written permission from the chief security officer of the university. Firearms must be stored at the University Security Office except with written permission of the chief security officer of the university. At no time will any of the above dangerous weapons be allowed in the university residence halls."
Now . . . one can make a twisted argument that since the shooter wasn't a student (as currently reported by BBC World Service news), the rules didn't apply. More importantly, and the reality on today's college campuses, is that this same antiquated policy left these students and professor utterly defenseless.

Updated: Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, 11:06 pm -- CCRKBA has issued a statement regarding the shootings. Among the most compelling words comes the following: “Illinois lawmakers and anti-gun rights extremists should start explaining right now why they have consistently and systematically resisted progressive, sensible changes in state gun laws that would give people a fighting chance against this kind of outrage,” Gottlieb said. “Advocates of gun-free zones across the country should be held accountable for defending these areas of victim disarmament. These are places where violent criminals and crazies know they will face no resistance as they carry out their rampages."

Updated: Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, 8:49 pm -- Three students and a geology teacher are confirmed dead in the shooting at Northern Illinois University. The killer, also confirmed dead, then turned a gun on himself on a stage in front of other students. He was armed with a shotgun and two handguns on the supposedly safe, gun-free campus west of Chicago.

News reports say there has been a shooting at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Ill., which is located about 60 miles west of Chicago. Armed with a shotgun, the shooter gunned down at least 18 people. No fatalities have been reported, but several of those taken to hospitals have head wounds.
The attacker is dead, police report.
No point in asking whether the university was "posted" with "no gun" signs. Concealed carry is unheard of in Gov. Daley's state . . . er, I mean, in Illinois. If only a student, or staffer, or prof had been armed. The assailant may well have thought twice. But here, once again, he knew he had a victim rich zone.
How many more people have to die on college campuses or in shopping malls before politicians reverse these insane bans on lawful concealed carry? If they only had a brain.

Nebrask MSM Cites Lack of Pre-Emption, Gun Free Zones Weakening Safety
From KETV in Omaha, Neb., site of a deadly shooting.
" 'When you post an area and say that it's a gun free zone, what in fact you're doing is making a victim-zone,' said Schnieder. The Westroads Mall in Omaha is a "Gun Free Zone" and last December a gunman came there, killed eight people and wounded several others, before shooting himself to death."
"The KETV Newswatch 7 I-Team asked Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning if the law should be changed. 'I think it's not a bad idea. Maybe we do need to make that change,' said Bruning."
Not bad.

Another Shooting At Another Supposedly Safe 'Gun Free' Campus; This Time Its Louisiana
Updated: Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, 5:57 pm -- The shooter was a student at Lousiana Tech. Some 20 people were in the classroom when she fired upon her two victims, according to CNN.
*********
Updated: Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, 2:03 pm -- AP has a further update. The two women believed to be the shooting victims were shot while in their classroom seats. The third woman, the shooter, took her life. Authorities are trying to determine if she was a student at Lousiana Tech.

Updated: Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, 1:09 pm -- An update from MSNBC.
********
A female student at Lousiana Technical College in Baton Rouge shot two other female students, then turned the gun on herself this morning. The murder-suicide took place in a second floor classroom on the campus.
CNN has the early details.
And even if students had wanted to defend themselves using a firearm, it is illegal to do so. Here is the section of the Louisiana Tech safety manual dealing with safety on campus."If you observe a person on campus with a firearm or other deadly weapon, contact Police Enforcement immediately. If a person is threatening someone, call
911 immediately. State law forbids firearms on grounds of educational institutions even if the individual has a concealed weapons permit. State law provides for the college district to regulate deadly weapons, which includes firearms, on campuses. Louisiana Technical College does not allow firearms or any deadly weapon on its campuses."
These young ladies, the victime, never had a chance.
This an example of yet another campus where students have been told they will be safe because no guns are allowed. This very restriction is what draws violent sociopaths to shoot up schools, malls and churches. And students hands are tied. They cannot defend themselves.
Increasingly, and in some cases reluctantly, Americans are waking up to the reality that feel-good prohibitions against legal carry create nothing but victim-rich zones of opportunity for criminals.

Weapon Free Zones? More Like 'Come And Pick Your Victim' Zones
Updated: Friday, Feb. 8, 208, 9:48 am -- CONFIRMED! The City of Kirkwood, Mo. city building is, indeed, a safe, gun-free zone. The killer knew he would have a room full of helpless victims.
**********
Were these crimes in just the past two days all committed in weapon-free zones?
- Kirkwood, Mo. (city council members, police officers slain)
- Columbus, Ohio (well known radio personality slain)
- Portsmouth, Ohio (teacher slain)
We know that the execution style slayings of five women at a Tinley Park, Ill. mall took place in a a "safe, weapon-free, gun-free zone."
As for the question above, here is a hint: For sure, the two murders in Ohio took place in supposedly safe, weapon-free zones. My money is on the Kirkwood city building also being another of these "safe" locations.
The question is when this insanity about creating these zones where murderers can barge in and execute their victims as random WITH NO FEAR is going to end?
