Clean Sweeps for Obama, McCain in Potomac Primary

Sen. Barack Obama beat Sen. Hillary Clinton handily in three states last night, becoming the democrat presidential candidate with the momentum.

Sen. John McCain handily beat back the continuing challenge from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Next Tuesday -- primary elections in Hawaii and Wisconsin.

Then on to Texas and Ohio for a big March 4 primary, where politicos are suggesting that Clinton must have a strong showing. She already has questions coming into her from donors, wondering if they are backing the winner. Another campaign committee change occurred yesterday, on the heels of her campaign manager being replaced, her deputy campaign manager stepped down.

Presidential Candidates As Joke Material

Comedians of all stripes -- late night, stand-up, etc. -- have some sort of schtick they do on the presidential candidates. While the electorate sometimes feels the differences between some of the candidates are blurred, their personalities are very different. And that often is great fodder for laughter.

Here are some jokes -- some clever, some just plain stupid -- told about the leading candidates who are vying for the Oval Office (in alphabetical order):

Hillary Clinton
Mike Huckabee
John McCain
Barack Obama

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? And Will Be Here For Breakfast? And Staying Through March 4?

Updated: Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, 12:34 am -- Team Clinton isn't wasting any time. Hillary will be in Columbus at the downtown Westin hotel to pick up the endorsement of Ohio icon, astronaut and retired U.S. Sen. John Glenn. Hope they brought their snowshoes!

*********
Oh God . . . now Ohio will descend into hell as the remaining presidential candidates come here to live for a while.

First up? The Clintons.

Who will be next . . . ?

In the meantine, our governor held a news conference today to talk about the election. He also voted early today (as Ohioans are now able to do), noting that he voted for Mrs. Clinton.

Three guesses as to why . . .

Republicans Aren't Happy; Is This The Answer?

An exhumation, anyone?

Potomac Primary

Updated: Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, 11:31 am -- Is Hillary playing the race card?

********
Barack Obama may do well in what is dubbed "The Potomac Primary," Tuesday's elections in Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland.

Mike Huckabee describes stepping out of primary to unify GOP as total nonsense.

Some say Hillary Clinton is bracing for her last stand. Personally, I don't think its over for her.

Perhaps her secret weapon is her daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

MEANWHILE . . . NYC's "Mayor Mike" weighs his options.

Presidential Campaign Updates

And Barack Obama is projected to win the Maine democrat primary.

Camp Clinton in a panic?
Obama beats Clint in weekend primaries, caucuses.
Huckabee picks up two more.
Paul says he will not mount an independent run

Meanwhile, Obama, Clinton and McCain share their ideas for "fixing" Ohio.

Outlook: For dems, Ohio, Texas on March 4 will be pivotal.

Dat Guy

Dat guy from Boston, Joe Ligotti, has been a hit on the internet with the military, with LEOs around the nation, and just regular folks. He reminds Americans we need to fight for our rights. His mantra is "I got the balls to say what you're thinking!"

Last month, a few days before the Super Bowl, he went on NBC's Tonight Show and talked to Jay Leno about California, living in Boston, food, and politics. His cabinet picks in a Guy From Boston White House? Joe Pesci as secretary of defense; Robert DeNiro as secretary of state; and his bookie from South Philly, Victor Vitale, for secretary of the treasury.

BTW, he's against gun control, too.

Whore-ible Commentary

What was said on MSNBC about Hillary Clinton's daughter did really go right up against the edge. But another newsreader on the same network used virtually identical language about President Bush and General Patreus last September, and NBC didn't even blink.

I guess cowtowing by the media depends on who "the word" is describing, and "the politician" complains about it.

Of course, David Shuster is no stranger to controvery. He has long been accused of sloppy journalism and blatant bias in his reporting. But one pundit at National Review is intrigued that while longtime factual blunders and bias have been overlooked by the network brass, the wrath of the Clinton campaign may be his undoing.

McCain Tells CPAC He's One Of Them; Obama Raises Big $$$; Clinton Loans Herself Big $$$

McCain tried to make nice. There were boos. There were cheers. He barely addressed gun control and never came near limitations on free speech -- two areas that are incredibly sore spots for conservatives. Read it here.

Elsewhere . . . Barack Obama on pace to raise $30M in February.

And Hillary Clinton loaned her campaign some big bucks.

Romney Drops Out

Mitt Romney "temporarily suspended" his campaign today. That's code for "I'm done."

Making A Case (Gulp!) For McCain

The Confederate Yankee makes a case for John McCain in 2008 (though he really doesn't want to).

Note: Chewing on Maaloox as I read this the first time.

SAF, CCRKBA Asks Prez Candidates To Sign 'Gun Rights Pledge'

"The Second Amendment Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today are transmitting to each of the Republican and Democr atic presidential candidates the “2008 Presidential Gun Rights Pledge.”

"In a letter to the candidates, SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb and CCRKBA Executive Director Mark A. Taff note, “It is not enough for a candidate for this nation’s highest political office to merely mouth ‘support’ for the Second Amendment. Whoever occupies the presidency must be someone who holds the Second Amendment to be as important to individual liberty as all the other tenets of our Bill of Rights.

"We’re asking each of the candidates to sign this pledge and go on the record in stating that the Second Amendment affirms a fundamental, individual civil right,” Gottlieb said. “We’ve heard them all claim to support the Second Amendment, but an individual civil right should not be infringed, and 85 million American gun owners have a right to know whether people who want to be trusted with the nation’s highest office are firm believers in the concept of liberty and individual freedom.”

Here is the pledge the candidates are being asked to sign.

Romney Receiving Big Bucks From Ohioans; Millions Spent For 'Super Tuesday'

This is interesting. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were the nation's top presidential fund-raisers last year, each collecting more than $100 million, but they lagged behind republican Mitt Romney in securing campaign dollars from Ohio.

Romney received 1.4 million from Ohio donors in 2007. The Plain Dealer has the story.

In the meantime, CNN has a report on the millions of dollars being "burned" in TV advertising to convince voters to pull the switch, check a box, or push a touchscreen for their favorite candidate on February 5's "Super Tuesday" primaries around the U.S.

Sigh . . . just imagine if that kind of funding were available to teach young people marksmanship, responsibility and leadership.

Gun Controllers Smell Blood?

With anti-gun democrats leading the pack for nomination as that party's candidates for presidents, and moderate to liberal republicans (all with histories of supporting gun control and/or free speech restrictions),seemingly ahead as well, it is being suggested that gun controllers smell blood in the water for the next four years. At a minimum.

In a piece titled "Anti-Gunners Gathering Like Maggots To Carrion," the writers at Little Red Pills show how various ban promoters seem to be coming together like never before.

Presidential Candidates Staying Mum On Gun Control

"Ironically, though these laws represent the ultimate goals of the gun “control” (actually gun ban) movement, they epitomize that movement’s political downfall. For Democratic candidates, an Eleventh Commandment has evolved: “Don’t mention guns”—while formerly anti-gun Republicans Romney and Giuliani now declare themselves faithful advocates of gun rights."

The words of Don Kates, noted criminologist. Read his full report here.

Let Me Be Your President

Well, not me. But all of the talk of presidential politics made me think. What if a regular guy were elected? The media likes the idea. Last year, the BBC ran a dramatic miniseries about a housewife who was elected Prime Minister of England.

So why not here?

One of my favorite baritones, singer/songwriter/comedian Mark Lowry, wrote this piece during the 2000 election season about running for the Oval Office. He makes some good points. Performed at the Kennedy Center in New York City.
