Chicago Cops Getting Machine Guns; Law Abiding Taxpayers Firearms Rights Ignored

UPDATED: April 30, 2008, 6:25 am -- CCRKBA is blasting Chicago's Daley for this decision, calling it "one more step toward turning his city into a police state by planning to give police fully automatic M4 carbines, while still fighting to block the gun rights of citizens not only in Chicago but throughout Illinois."

********
Either its poor word choice, or Mayor Daley's blind war against guns took a bizarre turn.

In a city where an honest taxpayer's firearms rights are virtually non-existent, the good mayor has taken his extreme policies a step farther and advocated arming police with M-4 rifles -- machine guns.

Does anyone else see a problem with this "disarm the law-abiding populace, arm the police" picture?

As in many other cities, the political class is only comfortable with guns in the hands of criminals(because the politicians have security details and don't live in dodgy areas), cops and campaign contributors/other glitterati, fellow travelers of the polticians who they trust.

This move would make more sense if Chi PD was regularly in firefights with the bad guys, as in Tiajuana. I read nothing of such engagements, but maybe they happen.

An M4 is not helpful in bagging bodies, writing reports and trying to find witnesses. This is what Chi PD's main duties are on violent weekends.

A supply of Bic pens and more paper would appear to be more useful.
