The End of the Electoral College?

Several states are moving forward to put the popular vote ahead of the Electoral College in presidential elections. Critics say population centers like New York City could nullify the vote in the Midwest. And opposing factions are digging in.

The organization pushing this movement is National Popular Vote.

Bottom line: It may be an old system, but for now our nation is still a democratic republic. The Electoral College works as it was designed -- to prevent one population center from dictating to the rest of the nation in national elections. People of genius created it. That an electorate ignorant of its importance is jumping on the "ditch it" bandwagon is disturbing, yet not surprising.

BTW, I guarantee you, if the outcome of the 2000 election had been reversed, and Al Gore had won an electoral college victory over a top popular vote getting George W. Bush, we would not be hearing about this. This is sour grapes over who lost, rather than fixing a system that works as intended.
