DC Files Its Heller Brief, Says Gun Law Saves Lives

The District of Columbia filed its brief with the U.S. Supreme Court today, stating that the long-time ban on handguns in the district saves lives. The Washington Post has the story. The Associated Press also has its take on the story, saying that DC and the 50 states are "unencumbered by the Second Amendment," and that the provision only applys to the federal government.

Meanwhile, DC's acting attorney general has chosen a new lead litigator , Walter Dellinger, to head the Heller case. Among the cases Dellinger has argued before the high court are ones dealing with physician-assisted suicide and the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act.

The Supremes are expected to hear oral arguments on this case in the spring and rule sometime in June or July on the constitutionality of the DC handgun ban, and the very meaning of the Second Amendment.
