A judge has granted a request by the National Rifle Association to delay the trial against the City of New Orleans for its illegal confiscation of lawfully owned firearms in the aftermatch of Hurricane Katrina. The NRA wants additional time to track down New Orleans residents who simply gave up and moved out of the city, or the state, following the disaster.
"The groups accuse the city of violating gun owners' constitutional right to bear arms. (Police Superintendant) Riley has said most of the guns were found in abandoned homes or were taken from people trying to board evacuation buses or enter shelters after the storm."
Right. Tell that to the elderly woman who was forcibly removed from her home (for her own safety) and was disarmed in the process by California Highway Patrol officers "helping out" in the Crescent City. The scene made national TV headlines, albeit briefly. Apparently it was distasteful to see a woman in her 80s man-handled by the authorities. Oh, and there is also that distasteful part about having her civil liberties grossly violated, too.
