Spitzer Folded Cards Because He Might Not Get Re-Elected

"New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said Wednesday he was abandoning a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, but said that the federal government had "lost control" of its borders and left states to deal with the consequences.

"Spitzer said overwhelming public opposition led to his decision."

Not likely. While I agree with Gov. Spitzer that the border problem is out of control, the only reason this politician folded was NOT because of the overwhelming public opposition to the proposal, but the overwhelming public opposition to him getting re-elected (because of his proposal).

Anti-self-defense politicians routinely pass gun regulation ordinances and statutes in the face of overwhelming opposition, but only when they do not fear being removed from office the next time voters go the polls. Spitzer was facing that kind of heat here.
