I stopped by one of the local bookstores this evening and came across a title from 2006 that is definitely worth picking up. "One Nation Under Therapy: How The Helping Culture Is Eroding Self-Reliance," is a look at various facets of "emotional correctness."
Yes that would be the sensitive, emotional, touchy-feely side of political correctness. Not a bad read. I particularly liked the discuss of the gradual prohibition of dodgeball and, as the Amazon description notes, "using one's 'therapized feelings' as an excuse for bad behavior.
From Page 1: "In 2001, the Girl Scouts of America introduced a 'Stress Less Badge,' for girls aged eight to 11. It featured an embroidered hammock suspended from two green trees. According to the Junior Girl Scout Badge Book, girls earn the award by practicing 'focused breathing,' creating a personal 'less stress kit,' or keeping a 'feelings diary.' Burning ocean-scented candles, listening to 'Sounds of the Rain Forest,' or even exchanging foot massages are also ways to garner points."
Yep. That says a lot right there. Here is a link to Amazon.com for more information.
