NIU Security Plan Worked -- Everyone Was Notified Within 20 Minutes

Updated: Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, 4:31 pm -- NIU officials acknowledge the obvious. With current safety program in place, its unlikely that anyone could have stopped the massacre. Actually, they say no system could have stopped the shooting.

I would humbly disagree. The current program leaves college students defenseless. The Chicago Sun-Times has the story.

But colleges around the nation could change that. The "Empty Holster" protests held around the nation last fall were yet another wakeup call for college chancellors of the concerns among many students. These latest shootings at DeKalb and Baton Rouge are horrifying reminders of the weakness in security caused by feel-good firearms bans.

20 minutes? Some plan.

If I were NIU, I wouldn't be bragging too much. The carnage -- because students, faculty and staff are not permitted the tools to defend themselves -- was over in minutes.

In a related matter, Breda notes that a paraprofessionals working in her library has a son who goes to NIU. He was in the building 10 minutes before the shooting happened, and said that he now believes that he passed the shooter in the hall on his way back to his dorm.

She adds: "The librarians, feeling safe and protected in a gun-free zone, are in a bit of a tizzy."

I'll bet.
